Yeah I would skip Haleakala as well personally. Was not worth it at ALL to me.

We did the road to hana as well, booked it with some tour company, it was much better taking in all the views and letting someone else do the driving.
We stopped at some hole in the wall for lunch which was a neat experience and it ended up at a winery at the end before they dropped us off back at our hotel.
