The car went into the water at the Bonnabel Boat Launch about 4:05 p.m., Rivarde said. In an initial statement shortly after the incident, Rivarde said the driver had been found dead when the vehicle was removed from the water. He later said the driver was unconscious, but alive, and was taken to East Jefferson General Hospital.

A couple said they were parked in the boat launch's lot when they saw people running towards the water as the top of the SUV disappeared under the surface about 4 p.m.

Rivarde said multiple good Samaritans tried to get the man out of the vehicle before first responders arrived, but were unable to get the door open. The SUV was fully submerged at the end of the pier when emergency personnel arrived, and the driver was removed from the car within minutes, Rivarde said.
