I think the passing of time has skewed your view on the matter.

Watergate involved the POTUS actively lying to members of his cabinet, multiple federal agencies and courts and the American public in order to cover up multiple felonies performed on his behalf. Nixon attempted to do exactly what all dictators must do before they can become dictators, it just didn't work. But he absolutely tried to subvert the legal system and our entire system of government to gains political edge and crush the opposition.

What he did was a direct threat to the very foundations of our democracy.
