Except it didn't ensure it.
We had new information since the beginning of the game, and that information was that ND just marched down the field and scored on the previous drive. A coach should take new information into account.

the other new information we had was that Notre Dame had stuffed us all game on the goal line. We were 0 out of 6 on goal line attempts against ND in that game already that day.
