Same Poll says that only 42% of Democrats believe that "Knowingly portraying false information as though it were true" is Fake News. My hunch is that these questions and available responses were not clearly understood.

These surveys are often super biased and write questions that lead to the desired responses. Anybody who's ever studied statistics or data can tell you this.
That said, you can double that percentage of the republicans on this board. Just last night Hail posted a shitty fake meme about Sanger w a totally made up quote, 45 upvotes & 4 downvotes. A couple posts later I actually called him out, made it clear she never actually said that, 11 down votes & 1 upvote (although I was kind of snarky).
This poll is hitting on some real truth in our country (on both sides), the truth is now something you can google search until you find it in a form that you like. Anything else? people call it fake news.
It's a dangerous trend in my opinion, doesn't benefit anyone except those in the media industry. It's creating an even bigger political divide that probably shouldn't be there.

People not understanding the questions certainly plays some role. But that definition was the only one listed that didn’t specify that the source was a journalist or a news agency. Responses to that question weren’t nearly as different based on party as the one OP mentioned, and the people of both parties that answered “sometimes” were likely just considering that a person presenting a lie as the truth may be “fake” but it’s only “fake news” if it comes from a source that represents itself as a source of news.
