I've been seeing this quote a good bit lately, and I think one problem with how it is used today is that it lacks the context in which it was originally placed. King was speaking not only about a type of person, white moderates, but he was doing so in the context of ongoing debates about policies. The underlying principle of racial equality under the law is almost universally accepted now in this country. The real questions now are over policies, such as policing. As I joked with a friend the other day, how woke I am probably depends a lot on the policy being proposed.
