Sounds like that church has a misunderstanding about the mission field. Everywhere you go is a mission field. There are a lot of people in the U.S. that need to hear the gospel.
sounds like you're not a literalist, interpreting the Bible word for word.
"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse" (Romans 1:20) and "the requirements of the law are written on their hearts" (Romans 2:15). Taken together these passages claim that everyone has an fundamental knowledge of God.
Why preach at all?

quote:I'm not a literalist in the sense that I take the entire Bible literally. The Bible includes many different forms of literature, including poetry, and therefore whether or not we should take the words literally should be based on the context of the writing from verse to verse, chapter to chapter, and book to book.
sounds like you're not a literalist, interpreting the Bible word for word.
quote:Yes, that's true. But...
"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse" (Romans 1:20) and "the requirements of the law are written on their hearts" (Romans 2:15). Taken together these passages claim that everyone has an fundamental knowledge of God.
quote:That fundamental knowledge of God will save no one. The knowledge is enough to condemn everyone but save no one, which is why Christ had to become a man, fulfill the law perfectly, die on the cross, and be raised from the dead. The gospel message is all about what Christ did to save sinners. If you think the fundamental knowledge of God's existence is enough to save people, then the entire work of Christ was for nothing.
Why preach at all?
Why do we preach? Because we're commanded to and because it's how people are saved: God uses the preached word to work in the hearts of sinners through the working of the Holy Spirit. Therefore--like I said--the whole world is the mission field, including your neighbors, coworkers, and random people you meet going about your daily business.
