Yes, but wanton waste is not what I described. Taking a picture of your birds and discarding them the same way one would a breasted bird, is not wanton waste. It's waste but not illegal.

Correct. Wanton waste means you did not make an attempt to find the duck/deer/whatever
Once a deer or duck or fish is in your possession you can do whatever you want with it. Not saying it's right, but you can feed it to your dog or throw it in the trash. Not illegal
