I applied for a part time / reserve position just out of curiosity. In 2000 at 19 years old the idea of having a job that was exciting and fun and making 40k a year to do it sounded awesome
19 year old me was a fricking idiot and I blame him for all of my shortcomings in life
What was so horrible about it?

The pay isn’t bad in the right place. Some departments start at 70k a year if you have a degree. Other places you can make good money if you have no social life and work every extra duty detail you can get.
It’s a job that you burn out quick from. It’s mentally draining. Most the people you deal with don’t like you and don’t want you around. You have to be able to fight someone and gain control of them and still be courteous.
Think about it, you spend a 12 hour shift dealing with other people’s problems and trying to find solutions to it. They’ll tell you they have no faith in you and that they pay your salary. Call you names and look down on you but you still have to give them 100% because your integrity and reputation is on the line and you swore an oath.
That’s not even getting into the politics. Imagine being a detective and spending weeks talking to crying victims (rape, theft, etc) and loosing sleep trying to get them justice only to have the DA’s office skim over your report, offer some bullshite plea deal and move on.
