It’s hard to beat Levon Helm’s Arkansas twang for their most famous songs. But Richard Manuel really is under appreciated on songs like Long Distance Operator and Lonesome Suzie. Love Danko on Makes No Difference.

Danko was the first Band member to get a solo deal, so I'm going Danko.

Levon Helm’s Arkansas twang
Insurmountable essentially, very distinctive component of The Band's overall sound and projection

Levon’s voice was the Band’s bridge to America.
It’s hard to imagine they have the same success without him.

Weird because they’re 4/5 Canadian

Really - counting harmony and backing vocalists, The Band is probably underrated as a 2- and 3-part (even more) harmony group.
As much as I like Manuel, Levon and Danko are clearly the 2 best lead vocalists, and - to tell the truth, most of the songs that really endure for me are the ones Levon sang.
So, there's all of that.

There's no way you actually think Danko is a better singer than Richard Manuel, right? Have you ever listened to The Great Divide?

Music is subjective - it may be as much as I like the songs that Danko sings better - like I said, I do like Manuel, too.

Yes.

The most talented was Manuel, my favorite was Levon

Danko for It Makes No Difference & Unfaithful Servant
Then a Levon/Manuel push because I can’t choose btw Dixie/Cripple vs. Shape/Rockin Chair (though Levon split that one)
