5 years seems a bit harsh, when you tally up the days that's damn near half a year in prison for shooting a deer. People get less than that for DWI's/drugs/ some violent crimes, etc

Correct!

Assuming it is Saturday and Sunday only...

Hunting season in that county is 99 days long.

99 days / 7 days per week = ~14 Saturdays and 14 sundays

14 days x 2 days per week = ~28 days

The season typically starts and stops on a weekend giving extra weekends per season.

=~ 30 days per season

30 days per season x 5 years = 150 days in jail

150 days / 365 days per year = ~.41 years in jail

If we are talking Fridays too, you are looking at 220 days or .60 years

I think the judge may have been too lenient, the fool is still free to poach Monday through Friday. So he really only took away ~30% of his hunting season away.

I like the sentence, but I think he should have given him 150 days in jail with the sentence suspended based on him working 1,500 hours (10 hours per day for the 150 days) of community service to be complete over the next 5 years (with a requirement of a minimum of 250 hours per year). Make his arse work picking up litter and trash in the off season on some WMAs.
