It is thought that a strain of chicken pox or zoster virus causes it if I recall correctly. It is debilitating but not disabling unless you work in a profession like broadcasting or something where you are communicating publicly. It only affects the muscles in your face. It paralyzes them in a slack state. You can’t smile, raise your eyebrows, wink, etc. In my case eating was also an adventure. Tried to do that alone as much as possible.
