Its always hard to wrap my head around these dual claims of ownership you see around the world. Especially when only one entity is in control of its governing.

It’s clearly not Chinese territory if it’s independently governed and China has no military presence there. They act like it’s our hawaii but doesn’t even seem like our phillipines / Puerto Rico

I understand them being against the US establishing a military relationship in their area, like we did with Cuba/Russia in the Cold War. But claiming it’s theirs just doesn’t make sense to me

I’m sure someone knows more than me though

Prior to the Communist Revolution, Taiwan was a province of China. When the reds took over mainland China, the government in exile fled to Taiwan and rules it to this day. Thus, they believe that they are the legitimate government of China, and the Maoist government of China believes Taiwan is merely a breakaway province that should be returned to the whole.
