how was your internet before that? Did you pay to access web sites?

No but it was on the way. By the end of 2014 Netflix had already started paying Comcast because Comcast was throttling traffic to Netflix. It's not a far step from that to offering customers a "fastpass" for better access to Netflix.

Someone will read this and say "well change your ISP" and that's a good rebuttal... for those that have a choice.

But the problem for those that have the choice is that it would happen without your knowing it.

So you realize what's going on and you call your ISP to complain. They offer you their Netflix pacakge for just an extra $3/month.

You get pissed off and hang up then call a competitor (which is most likely just one other) and they say they can schedule you for next week. Great! You call your current provider and tell them all the creative ways they can fornicate with their service. They inform you they are sorry to see you go and you will be charged an early termination fee.

Big deal, you won. You got your Netflix without having to pay extra! Huzzah!

Now your current ISP sees how much Netflix everyone on their network in your area is using so they put in the same policy.

Or maybe the competitor's service sucks, which is why you were with the other company to begin with.

What now?
