It's not so bad.

1. Yes even though zigbee was touted as an open system in reality it seems like everyone is doing their own thing. Hue requires a hub but imo it's worth it because of so the 3rd party development. You're ST hub is a brain for virtually everything else so don't get rid of it. Sooner or later you will want to buy a smart doodad and if you have the ST hub already you likely won't have to worry you can't control it.

2. IFTTT is free website that lets you tie all kinds of shite together. If you want Twitter to automatically post something when LSU is playing on TV and Instagram to post a screengrab of your living room from your webcam and turn your lights purple and gold you can do it. It allows you to connect all the web shite and smart doodads like Legos. Oodles of fun.

3. Stringify - someone else will have to weigh in. I haven't used this yet.

4. Alexa is a no brainier. Plug a dot in and log into your hue account and then you can tell your lights to dim, change colors, blink and all kinds of random stuff. I have an IFTTT recipes that blinks all my lights all over the house 3x when any timer is done in case I'm not in the same room as the dot or I'm playing music loud and don't hear it.

It’s like IFTTT on steroids.

You can make a flow with if, only if, and, or, while, else, etc. You can also pass functions, strings, and perform math calculations between objects.

Edit: I started using it a while back bc I had trouble with IFTTT triggering events based on other events (ie. sunset -1hr). I was able to set my outdoor lighting with one flow rather than multiple IFTTTs. It was more reliable. I can also run a weather report at the time of my choosing, pass keywords (cloudy, rain) to devices and have them perform actions based on that.

I’m sure IFTTT is also cable of these things but I never bothered bc it was super easy with Stringify to make a flow.
