I was disappointed with Chavis, but our LB play improved a frickING ton under him. He's not half as bad as you LSU guys make him out to be but he's not half as good as TexAgs told me he would be. Good hire for Pig and Morris, not great.

He's a good lb coach but he's also super biased to his little pet players and will frick up playing time for that. He started a kid that wouldn't start anywhere else in d1 over Deion Jones and Kendall Beckwith for yearS. Jones was a backup OLB and walks into the NFL as a stud ILB from day one.

He's a good DC when he has studs everywhere and can just be basic. If not, he's nothing great. See late Tennessee era and A&M. Plus he is always garbage in any prevent or 3rd and long situations regardless of what players he has.

He'll also recruit basically one lb from Tennessee (near his off season home who knows some coach he has connects with) per year and that's it. So others have to carry his weight in that area.

I'll admit that at first I was pissed at the way that Chief left LSU. Still pissed that he was out recruiting for aTm before the smoke from the bowl fireworks had cleared...

But it has become very apparent that Chief is a really good DC when he is surrounded by superior talent and position coaches, and an average DC otherwise. I think back to the game here a few years ago when we had Alabama beat in Death Valley, and then Chief called nothing but deep prevent and they marched right down the field and destroyed us with screens.

And that wasn't the only instance, but it's at the forefront of my mind at this moment. I can't help but think that had Aranda been DC in that game, he would have stuck to what was working instead of a conservative, drastic change when being aggressive had worked all night.
