Ok. But that doesn't explain how the two worst (morally) people to seek the presidency in modern times beat out all competition in their respective parties in 2016. Or how an alleged ephebophile beat out other Republicans for nomination to the Senate. Mind you, we're talking intra-party races and primaries, so it's not about "who represents your policy positions." These are the guys the people wanted.
Hillary has name recognition and in addition was able to use the party to prevent competition from even entering against her
Roy Moore was the completely logical result of what happens when all of the money flows in behind a candidate nobody wants and then uses that money to run a scorched-earth campaign against Mo Brooks. Basically they poisoned the well. Mo Brooks supporters would have rather stick a needle in their eye then go to the polls for Luther strange after that bullshite primary
Finally Donald Trump is super easy to explain. It started out as him just making the most noise and a multi horse race so that everybody else split the vote among themselves. And then the turning point was when all of the rest of them decided to become Democrats and blame Trump supporters for the fact people were coming to kick their arse.
All three of those are completely easy to explain politically. To pretend otherwise is silly

I was making the point that we have politicians who "represent the worst" of the citizenry because we obviously don't place a premium on character or decency--though we inexplicably claim to.

How Hillary and Trump won isn't hard to explain at all. How they were selected by people who claim that they want good, honest leaders leading them is.
