Depends on what games they want/like to play and what their friends have. Boys in the older end of that range would likely rather have a PS4 or Xbox One to play Call of Duty, Madden, FIFA, and Fortnite. Younger end would be able to play Mario Kart and some of the Nintendo classics.

6-12? Just get them an N64.

Your mileage may vary on that.
I find old Nintendo games of any quality tend to be comparable in price to new games on current generation systems.
If you have an old N64 and games around and just need to get controllers, that’s one thing.
Picking up all their multiplayer classics like Goldeneye, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, is expensive enough you may as well buy a multicart and download a ton of ROMs.
