That SEC West team was Mississippi State...

They would have started too far back at the beginning of the season. The truth is there are only a handful of teams that can make it to the playoffs every year without going undefeated. Bama starts at 1-2. So when they lose a game, they only drop to 5-6. Mississippi State starts unranked. So when they claw their way up, one loss and they’ll drop 12-13 spots. Happens every year.

It's the same reason UCF isn't given even a serious consideration for the playoff.

It's silly, but how you perform the year prior impacts if you can make the playoff for this season.

Mississippi State was #1 in the very first playoff rankings in 2014. And Ole Miss was also in the top 4 I believe... so had this scenario somehow played out that year, and Mississippi State had finished 11-1, they probably would have made it in over a 2-loss conference champ.

No guarantee though.

I don't think this applies anymore since the first ranking doesn't come out until midseason and they start with a clean slate each week.

If they got to 11-0 going into the Ole Miss game, they would be a #1 ranked team considering they would have beaten Georgia, Bama, LSU, and Auburn along the way. And if going 11-1 with a loss to Ole Miss kept them from winning the west, then it means Ole Miss was 7-1 or better in the SEC...which means Miss St's only loss would've been to a pretty highly ranked Ole Miss team. So unless they got blown out in the Egg Bowl, they wouldnt drop far.
