Irrelevant, if you're in the upper middle class you're enjoying a high salary, low cost of living, and low taxes.

Sure, other states have higher pay to adjust for their higher cost of living, but the feds do not care. If you make 100k in Louisiana you pay the same federal income tax as you do making 100k in California.

From a financial standpoint, so long as the Federal Income Tax rate doesn't adjust for cost of living, and so long as you have a good paying job, the south isn't at the bottom of the list with regards to how much expendable income you have.

Later urbanization = land isn't as scarce.
