It may not seem that long ago, but the ability to throttle and control speed and content before that time was a lot different than it is now. It's why ISPs didn't fight it then - now they have a lot more to gain from it.

Good. Maybe mass downloaders won't overload my node and I will get consistently the speed I pay for and choose. This doomsday prophecy is all for naught. If people don't like pricing models (if they do in fact change - some will probably benefit certain consumers), they'll go to a competitor. It's not as if every ISP will attempt to frick consumers, as especially in cable, internet is their cash cow. There is enough choice and competition in the vast majority of cities to deter predatory pricing and overly restrictive usage.
