There are three sides to the story: the nephew of the OP, the spouse who ran off, and the truth.

Humans will always tell a story in whatever manner leaves them in the best light. That may be telling the complete truth, or it may be leaving out key details.

My comment to the OP was to make sure he got ALL the details, not just buy whatever his nephew told him as gospel truth just because he told it and appears to be the victim here, without some verification.
