I have given a dollar to those things a few times, or bought a piece of candy to donate to the children's hospital around the holidays. Just when I happen to get caught in a good mood. I generally don't like it though. Feels kind of scammy, and I feel kind of like I can't trust where the money is going.

Me: Maybe. Tell me about their organizational structure and how they spend donations.
Cashier: Ummmm...
Me: Well how much of each dollar is spent on administrative costs and fund raising versus actually benefitting the cause?
Cashier: Uhhhh....
Me: I work hard for my money and generally like to know where it is going.
Cashier: Never mind. Paper or plastic?
