I think attending football games has always been a social gathering, but be that as it may, televising every game has a lot more to do with lower attendance than anything else. In the 50's and early 60's one was content if their team had one televised game a year.
High school games such as Jesuit - Holy Cross could draw a crowd of 20 to 30K when there was less in the way of entertainment options.

If anything, I'd argue LSU football games were much more "social gatherings" back in those days than they are now. People used to dress up in their finery to go to games back then. They've pretty much always been the number one social event of Baton Rouge. People who act like it's otherwise, have no idea what they're talking about.
