More than two hours after the shooting, tension erupted into chants of “back up don’t shoot.” The chanting and music from the onlookers continued into the night.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome issued a written statement late Monday about the shooting: "I am closely monitoring the Baton Rouge Police Department officer-involved shooting that took place tonight. Per protocol, the Louisiana State Police is investigating this case. I am sure that the LSP will demonstrate the highest level of transparency throughout this investigation. I ask that the community withhold judgment on this incident until the LSP concludes its work."

One woman who lives in the complex said the shooting took place about 10 feet from her front door; she saw only the immediate aftermath.

She said the victim was a young man. “I know one thing: That little boy had no weapon,” she said, declining to give her name but identifying herself as a complex resident and identifying the victim as someone she knew.

She said just after he was shot, the victim tried to run from police. He then saw her and told her: “Tell my momma and my auntie that I love them and I’m sorry.”
