The way this class is shaping up, this could be the best recruiting LSU ever had. Going back to the Days of Coach Mac with no limits.

How many schollies do we have left to offer - considering ones that will be held open until signing day?

In the good ole days, Bear Bryant at BAMA dominated the SEC by cherry picking the best talent from Louisiana, Miss., Florida, and Georgia. LSU was always a weak sister to Bryant's BAMA due to inferior talent levels.
Today, LSU matches up with the very best programs in the nation--thanks to Saban!

Don't know that I completely agree with that. There were years in the McClendon era that LSU was as just talented as Bama, but it was rare that LSU was as well-coached. I think of the Bert Jones, Tommy Casanova era and wonder why we still couldn't beat Bama (though we did beat them in 69 and 70). I was always struck in my college years as to how conservative offensively McClendon would become against Bama. I always thought he approached the Bama game with the attitude, "just don't get beat too badly," as opposed to "let's look for a way to win." He didn't show that tendency in other games as much as he did when he was playing Bama.

Same could be said for nearly every team versus Florida under Spurrier, every team versus USC under Carrol, etc...
It'd be nice to see Crowton take our offense to the level where teams are so scared that we are going to score 50+ that they play tight and have no chance to win. That takes years to establish, and hopefully it is coming soon.

On the high interest list you have Chris WIlliams listed twice.

What years are you talking about? The Bear alwasys reloaded and Mac always rebuilt.
Funny how the Bear lost his SEC dominance when Spurrier's Gators dominated the SEC with superior talent. And who would be calling Spurrier a coaching genius if he was stuck with Gamecock talent his whole career?
Charlie Mac had very little talent on offense to get fancy with.

Wow. I didn't realize Bear Bryant, dead in 1983, was able to coach against Spurrier in the 1990's. I guess this why Bama fans are always talking about the "Ghost of Bear Bryant".

You are joking right?
Yeah, that Bert Jones was certainly not a talent, barely made it in the NFL. Poor guy had to resort to calling his own plays much of the time due to inadequacy of calls from the sidelines.
Terry Robiskie was pretty bad too. What a shame. Charlie Alexander, one of LSU's few real Heisman candidates other than Cannon, Mike Miley, Steve Ensminger were subpar too. Boyd was a lousy receiver. Etc., etc., etc. LSU was loaded most years with great running backs, some pretty good QBs and some excellent receivers, like Andy Hamilton, for instance.
Mac had loads of talent on offense much of the 1970s. He just never used it as effectively as he might have. In large measure that was because his OC was unimaginative. A former QB for LSU once told me during that era that he could sit in the stands and call every single play that LSU was going to run, and if he could do it, so could every DC that we played against.
But even with that comment, apparently you weren't around when he used a 2 QB formation at when playing Ole Miss but the next week, it was as if he had never heard of the forward pass against Alabama. I always liked the strategy of being behind by 2 touchdowns fairly late in the 4th quarter and punting on 4th and 2 near midfield when playing Bama.

Offensive coaching creativity was a problem during those years, but just as significantly, LSU did not have the depth at each position that BAMA had.....with scholly limits, things have changed dramatically.
I agree, though, it's hard to knock LSU's front-line talent with the likes of Bert Jones and Tommy Casanova....just to name a few....LSU could go head-to-head with all the great teams of that era for at least 3 quarters....sometimes, they'd actually win the big game.
