How about Let The Right One In vs. Let Me In? Never saw the American version, but I heard it was weak.

I'd disagree. They are very similar, though there's a subtle but very real distinction in their thematic elements. The remake has more to say about the alienation within society than the original, especially in the context of Reagan's America. They're both quite good, just subtly different. Also, the sexual ambiguity of Eli in the original is completely gone from Abby (the equivalent character in the remake.) Which is good, because nobody is going to mistake Chloe Grace Moretz for anything other than a young girl.
One advantage the remake has is that it omits that laughable cat clowder attack.
