For the record, I don't care that Pence went out of his way to make a political statement.
He was rejecting a political statement...at a football game. I think the distinction is important because he isn't forcing his political stance on those at the game to see the game.
The players are using football, which has nothing to do with the protest itself. They've chosen to piss off people because they think it furthers their cause. A response to that protest by fans or even the Vice President is not equally misplaced. And, it's crazy to equate them.

I would like to start by saying that I have no issue with the time and place of players kneeling, and I have no issue with the time and place of Pence doing what he did.
With that said, I think your attempts at a time and place distinction is unfair (god I hate that word...). Mike Pence is the Vice President of the United States. Anytime he wants to speak, some news organization will put a microphone and TV camera in front of him. He has immense power to reach the public.
NFL players, on the other hand, get the attention of the media and populace for about three hours a week, unless they do or say something tremendously fricking stupid. If they want to shine a light on something, they have a finite amount of time to do so.
On a related note, Olympic athletes have an even shorter shelf life, so I have zero issue with this:
