No person in a position of power want to admit a mistake, ever.
So one route is Alleva refuses to fire CEO based on a gambler's mentality of "there's still a chance" and the fact that firing is an admission of guilt.
The other route is to go ahead and fire quickly and shift a portion of the blame to the person fired. But that is biting the bullet (or a fragment of it) and admitting a mistake at the same time. The earlier Alleva fires in this scenario only determines the size of the blame shifted.
