I had a bulging disc at L5-S1 when I was 31 years old in 1987. A neurosurgeon did a microdiscectomy, I had immediate pain relief (Had leg pain). Have been fine since. See a neurosurgeon (a good one), not an orthopedic surgeon.

I had an L5-S1 herniation and tried many alternatives before waking up one morning and not being able to get out of bed. It was a Saturday and so spent a miserable weekend in agony. Had the surgery on the next Wednesday and woke up pain free. Its been good since....that was 17 years ago. Well....I did herniate another disc being stupid 6 years later.....had surgery immediately and have been good ever since. I even run once or twice a week now.

Had an L5 herniation about 15 years ago and couldn't stand up long enough to piss. Had three epidurals and none worked so I had a discectomy and immediate pain relief. About seven years later, had L5 and L4 herniations and just went ahead with another discectomy right away and felt great. I'm always amazed at people that go different routs with herniated discs other than a discectomy and just continue to suffer.
