Every year needs at least 5 OL.

Let's assume you're wrong for sake of argument.

If you go 4, EVERY YEAR - and you redshirt every single one, you only have 12 scholarship linemen available for a game, assuming no one goes pro early and you have no attrition.

And if you don't redshirt every single one, then that means you're playing true freshmen on the OL.

So, I think when rational people look at it - you should be taking 5 more years than not. If you don't, you've got problems if guys go pro, you have any attrition or you don't want to play true freshmen.

I'd like to see us take too many OT, convert them to G if necessary, instead of the other way around. If you have to choose, and with recruiting you sometimes do, that's the way to go. UGA (and Bama) usually go for 3 OTs a cycle if there's enough with talent out there. And they probably avg around 5 total OL a year, meaning 2 OGs and 3 OTs. It works for them.

Converting OTs to G or C, when you avg. 2 OTs a year is crazy to me.

Problem is, you can only "catch up" so much per year. If you're playing catch up with any group with 3 or more per position it's tough. OL are the toughest, you have 5 and OTs are a specialist. So if we went out and got 8 in '18 we'd be caught with pants down 3-4 yrs from now OR another group would suffer over the same time period, or both.
