Just watched his highlight reel at lesmiles.net. Has there ever been another LSU defensive player that just seemed to always be at the right place at the right time? What an athlete. Not a single offer from another SEC school.
And please spare me the pot jokes.

Greedy Williams trying to step up and be the next one.

Chad Jones...Patrick Peterson.

Two greats for sure. I had forgotten how much they allowed him to blitz. Half his highlights were in the opponents backfield. He could cover 20 feet as quickly as any I've ever seen and then deliver a blow capable of separating the ball from the runner or QB.

He was the most timely and opportunistic, impactful player I've ever seen. From the strip and resultant TD against Oregon on the punt to his returns against UGA in the SECCG, just incredible. I still weep for that 2011 team and the talent our coaches stubbornly squandered in the Super Dome. Makes me sick.

The guy has psychic abilities.

Peterson was close but not on the same level. TM seemed to take over games time and time again and he was a threat to score any time he was on the field.

Without TM we lose 2 more games in 2011. At least. If we had him in 2012 we're back in the championship game.

Agreed. The team also fed off of him and elevated their game. Remember how the kickoff team would fly down field and deliver a huge hit because they were so pumped?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought UT offered him. They were the proverbial first on the scene after he blew up their camp.
ETA: The most underrated Badger moment was against Florida in 2010 when he stripped Moody on a 17 yard run, dove over his body and recovered the fumble. The guy is just a freak.

Man, I really agree! He's a special athlete & person.
The first time I was ultra aware of him is when laid out to intercept Tannahill of A&M; what a play.

PP7 was always on that CB's island doing his thing against the best receivers in the SEC while TM7 was often blitzing or supporting the run from the safety position.
Sure, TM had plenty of coverage highlights but so did PP. The difference was that TM was an elite blitzer and often allowed to do so.

Peterson, Chad Jones and a others were great at their position. Doing their jobs with greatness. But TM did his job and a whole lot more. One of a kind.
I can't tell you how many times I said to myself "He can't continue to produce like that and be a difference maker in every game"... and he just kept on doing it! His frame rate is just twice as fast as everyone else.

Also, what impressed me about Mathieu was he was our best corner, then when Reid got hurt and couldn't play against Arkansas, he became our best safety. Guy was just incredible.
His line in that game was ridiculous. 8 tackles, 2 FF, 1 FR 1 92 yard punt return for a touchdown.

The amount of talent on that team was unreal. The amount of combined talent between LSU and Alabama that year was sick.
Wow I really miss those days.
