Well I thought the whole point of why teams go 4 wide and spread out is to move defensive players out of the box and into coverage forcing them to cover/tackle in space.

Or run screens and quick throws...right? we bitch about the Oline not blocking, but we make our gameplan dependent on the oline blocking long developing plays.

That was the propaganda narrative used to sell the "new" offense. Well now, after spring, the summer workouts, and 4 games, the OL still can't figure out the blocking, and the "new" offense ain't working. So now they have to change the narrative to keep the heat off their asses. It's the same principle in dealing with salesman using different excuses when the new car you just bought ain't working, and they're trying to get away from honoring the warranty.
