This could be good (for the team, not Asik). If he's still out by February then it might be debilitating enough to get a medical retirement and have him come off the books. So instead of stretching or paying to dump him, he comes off the books and insurance picks up much of the bill.

I feel so bad for this but I've never rooted more for a player to not recover quickly. Seriously, I hope he gets better and is okay. That's most important. But I selfishly want him to fully recover AFTER February.

I doubt he'll ever suit up again. Crohns is commonly associated with arthritis and osteoporosis. Definitely feel bad for the guy it'll be a tough road ahead


Something else to consider. Think about what we would've had to trade away to get Asik off the books. We trade him and he medically retires. I'm surprised it isn't going down like that, it's a very Pelicans thing to happen.

Also if he does retire do that technically make him an expiring contract??
