Social media has essentially taken every societal ill and amplified it x100

long-term this may be #1
i mean look at the 2 incidents that really poured gas and lit the match on national perception of the issues: Trayvon and Mike Brown. both stories were framed in completely biased, disgusting ways for political points by the media and these narratives turned out to be largely untrue
yet the narrative STILL lives on

The worthless piece of shite muslim racist Obama did this...

quote:Nah. Social media is #1 with a bullet. It's influence is only going to increase. The degree to which it facilitates relative anonymity and the self-selection of ideological cohorts ensures further cultural and ideological balkanization, rhetorically framed in the starkest manner possible. Add the easy and largely unchecked diffusion of misinformation and disinformation and you're really sitting on something pernicious.

Obama reminded everyone how black people are victims of everything. And the media went all in lock step, even to the point of editing 911 calls so it would appear more racist.

i think the underlying assumption that your argument requires i independent thinking, which doesn't exist on social media
they're just sheep-parrots, echoing what they're told by those who are creating the narratives

I think coverage can be the catalyst but social media is the mechanism responsible for any chaos these days.
People aren't calling their buddies on their landline leaving a voicemail asking what they think about a story. They are bombarded with and dishing out opinions to any and every soul with internet connection. And responses are no longer hard to organize, they are hard to avoid if you are all over social media
Funding is never more than a click away, any amount for any number of people. Everything is too easy

quote:Many of the most salient stories and narratives on social media over the last several years did not originate in the traditional media--pizzagate, Seth Rich, Trump saying all Republicans are stupid, Sandy Hook conspiracies, Pepe and associated memes, etc. And sincere, action-slurring belief doesn't require any particular depth of thought or originality. It just needs to hit home with something you're predisposed tomuncritically believe. Again, the traditional media do spin narratives, emphasize and de-emphasize facts and information to drive home a point, and operate from a place of conscious and unconscious bias. But they simply can't deal in outright lies and fantasies the way blogs, forums, webcasts etc. run by amateurs can.

Coverage does influence reactions. Who they choose to demonize lose the PR battle and are minimized, and who they glorify feel encouraged are untouchable unless you want to be the in the negative spotlight
If ESPN and other letter Networks weren't in love with the kneeling the NFL would have the freedom to end it without an onslaught of bad press. Plus these guys wouldn't be as motivated to do it in the first place
Most of the chaos right now would not be possible without social media though. And I also believe the big business social media has become is part of the reason controversy is as desirable as ever. Ask chicken how this past election has affected his wallet

This all started with your ignorant Messiah. From Henry Louis Gates to Michael Brown to Freddie Grey, that racist no-good piece of f*cking filth flamed the racial divide for his own racist political agenda. And every f*cking time, they ignorant mother f*cker was dead f*cking wrong.
No, it is you that is dead wrong.
He is not ignorant, and he was not wrong. Racial division is in his playbook. It is what he was taught as a youth, and it is what he taught as a "guest lecturer." He fanned the flames to near perfection, and didn't do anything to help those he professed to help in any meaningful way. It is classic Leftist/Statist strategy, and it was intentional.
Give him credit. He was prety good at what he did.

No doubt it was the former President, his wife and those who fanned his vision of America
