Correct....three year contract is a fairly short leash in the first place, or sure seems like it.
True. But the "poison pill" is the buyout. LSU is already paying Miles a large sum "not to coach". If they fired O after one season then they would be paying two coaches significant money "not to coach". That's on top of having to pay the new HC a significant amount TO coach. Eventually, you run out of money paying 3 guys for one job (two of which wouldn't be doing that job anymore).
Like it or not, once O was hired LSU was stuck with him for at least 2 seasons. We can debate all we want whether or not he should have been hired in the first place and if, based upon past history, Sat. night will become the norm, not the exception. But I think the realities are what they are. So there is no reason to think he will be fired after this season.
The first thing LSU needs to do is find themselves a new AD. Sorry, but no one really gives a shite how good the gymnastics, volleyball or golf teams are. Football, basketball, and at LSU, baseball, drive the boat. Alleva's first two basketball hires crashed and burned. He botched a coup to fire Miles in 2015 and then made a Johnny Jones type hire on the football side.
In a very small sample size Wade looks promising. But the lack of passion about LSU basketball has given Joe somewhat of an opportunity to frick up two hires there. Football is a different animal. He doesn't get the leeway to swing and miss like he's done in basketball.

So basically Tennessee. Which fans warned could happen when you run off national title winning coaches.
