My brother had an issue where a nerve that runs down your arm was moving out of place when he lifted.
It basically told his brain that he couldn't lift the weight.......
He had to have surgery to repair it. I want to say the ulnar nerve.

Did he have any sensory issues in his pinky or part of ring finger?
