As strange as it seems, both the left and the right use 1984 to demonize opposing views. I read a piece on the Atlantic about high school teachers using the book to rebuke Trump.

As if Trump is an authoritarian communist. Which is what Orwell was writing about.

Yes, but only one side (Left) has almost all control of the media (90%+), academia (75%+), is obsessed with erasing the past (monument removals), is doing everything in it's power to restrain free speech (Berkeley, etc), and is obsessed with identity politics to divide the masses.

That's not really strange when you think about it. The book demonized established authority. Both sides would likely believe it's the opposing authority that needs to be overcome.

hillary's take is bizarre in that she seems to champion the established authority.

it's not strange

everyone hates authoritarianism...when your opponents use it

my side is pure and will only use it for good, however, so it's cool if we use it for [insert proclaimed policy]
