Has to be Jefferson Airplane/Starship

Literally from Haight-Ashbury/Summer of Love/Woodstock anti-establishment hippie anthemists to halfway decent AOR(or progressive rock) outfit by the late 70s, to complete pop/lite rock sellouts in the early 80s.

Everyone else is fighting for second place.

Wasn't that a gentle slide though? I guess I was thinking of a singular moment or song.

Yeah Starship was pretty horrible. Once Kantner left Jefferson Starship in 1984 and sued the band from using the name, it was done. They lost something when Balin left IMHO, although Mickey Thomas did pretty good for a while with songs like Jane and Find Your Way Back (Modern Times), but by the time they moved onto "Laying it on the Line" and "No Way Out", they were just another pop group

Yes, but at one point every single original member of Airplane had left the band.....so it's not like it was an act of selling out by the originals.
