This is a really interesting juxtaposition. On the one hand Mathieu may have been the most impactful LSU player in the last 40 years. On the other, he's a guy who's career at LSU ended by him getting kicked off the team after only 2 seasons for disciplinary reasons. Yes, LSU is naming it after him because of the significant monetary donation. But they are also celebrating a guy whose habitual disregard of team/school rules got him dismissed from the program to the detriment of his fellow teammates.

I suppose you could say to some degree LSU's most celebrated player, Billy Cannon, has a similar story and his number is retired. However, Cannon's "public" legal issues didn't come until much later in his life well after his LSU playing days were over.

Does it look bad to have your Player's Lounge named after a former player who only played two (albeit great) seasons before getting kicked out of the program because he refused to follow the rules? Probably.

Do the current and potential future players care? No

A great players' lounge is a recruiting tool, plain and simple. Some may not like the fact it is named after a player who was dismissed from the team. But if it helps land future great players I'm sure those people will "get over it"

If you do not think LSU fans are proud of Mathieu for turning his life around, you are wrong. And I do not think I am alone in being thoroughly disgusted with the behaviors by Tyrann that caused him to let down the team and the university.
I am now a big fan (again) and it is NOT just because of his talent. He's a great success story, and he'll tell you LSU played a role in the turnaround of his life.
