I don't really understand people getting that worked up about paying 700-1000 for a phone. I mean, I guess I reconstruct how they get to that point, but it's not very rational.

I gauge value based on use. I have no problem paying 300+ for headphones that get used for a few hours almost every day. That is a lot of value for something I really enjoy. And while the SQ difference from 20 dollar headphones may not be worth it for minimal use, it is over the long term.

Similarly, for a phone, most of us use them constantly. I'm not one of these people who watches movies or plays games on their phone, but apparently there are tons of them. So something that'll you'll use 3/4s of every day for a couple of years, is it worth a premium price? Probably, in my mind.

That's exactly the problem. Steve Ballmer famously talked about how big of a failure the iPhone would be because it was so expensive and has since admitted that he didn't seen the Wireless Carrier subsidy model coming. Without the "first hit free" we got because of the subsidies, we'd probably all still have flip phones.
