re: Petition to "Wait Until 8th [grade]" to buy cell phones

we got one for my son when he reached sixth grade because he had to start riding his bike or walking to school. We did not want to pay for day care for an 11 year old before and after school.
He stays at home in the morning after we leave for work then rides his bike to school, and he gets home in the afternoon before we do.
We want him to send a text and let us know when he gets to school and when he gets home and also just to contact us if anything is wrong.
He is now in seventh grade. We have restrictions setup on content he can view on his phone and he has limitations on when he is allowed to sit and play on his phone. He is also not allowed to have it upstairs in his room.
As long as a parent acts like a parent, it is not a bad idea or trashy for a middle school child to have a phone.

This is a great strategy. What we plan to do is let them have one when they are old enough to need to be picked up after practices/after school activities in case something goes wrong or they need to be picked up sooner. But as soon as they get home it's going on the top shelf
