Charcoal for Smoking Meats

First time smoker here. Are there certain types/brands that are better for lasting longer and keeping a constant temperature?

Kingsford Blue Bag will be best burn time and constant temp. I use Royal Oak Lump, burn time is not going to be quite as long, but way less ash and better overall flavor. Just my experience.

Royal Oak Lump Charcoal from Home Depot.
ETA: Also, avoid Cowboy lump charcoal at all costs. Stuff is garbage.

Kingsford Blue Bag is cheap and dependable. Just have to wait for it to burn clean smoke, which takes about 30 minutes.

Agree with the others on the Kingsford blue bag. I've had success with the applewood variety of it smoking pork.

It works much better in a ceramic. Kettles dry out the meat.

This is my experience. Use that and oak logs mixed together makes a great brisket.

If you can get your hands on Wicked Good, it's probably the longest burning/largest pieces lump I've ever used. Ace hardware used to carry it & you could buy it online & have it shipped to your local store. Dunno if that's still the case, I haven't smoked anything in the past 2-3 years. (I know, I need to rectify that)

Fogo beats everything else I've tried by a fairly large margin.

Do you find it local? I see you're in Ft. Worth so that won't really help me here in BR, but I've been wanting to try it. Guess i'll have to order it online

I use Royal Oak or Fogo (my favorite, burns a little cleaner).

I use Kingsford Blue when I'm doing the "snake method" in my Kettle.
I stock up on the 2 for 1 packs every Memorial/4th/Labor Day.

Looks like the closest Fogo dealer is in New Orleans.
However, the do free UPS 2 day on orders over $35. Boom.

$1.47 a pound!
I would go broke if I used that as my primary charcoal.

Same here. I've still got some left from the 4th (rained a ton here and cut down on my grilling) but I'll stock up again in a couple of weeks.

Burns very slow and lasts forever. Well, well worth it.

Not for how much I cook on my cookers.
