You want to attach them securely to the ground to avoid lateral movement. If you don't and it gets bumped or moved for some reason, there could potentially be a lot of shifting and crack the finish. Maybe not every cell needs to be filled but it would behoove you to have it attached well.

That makes sense, I didn't think about the finish cracking.
