"When do we start tearing down Washingtons statues?" Was his dumb comment.

See, I disagree with that. I think it's a statement that is open for debate, but I think it's hardly "dumb."

His argument is that all of our historical figues are fallible, and we are beginning to go down a slippery slope if we are going to start tearing down any reference to historical figures we think weren't 100% morally correct.

You could extend the logic to Andrew Jackson for his treatment of Native Americans. You could also extend it to Washington and a handful of other slave owning presidents.

One could contend that none of them rebelled against the US, but let's not kid ourselves. No one arguing for removal gives a shite about any of that. Hell, there are statues for John Brown, the Whiskey Rebellion, etc.

I think there is a moral ambiguity inherent in Lee's decision to lead the Army of Northern Virginia. In essence, he fought for his state, which was commensurate with the societal makeup of America at the time. Following the war, we came together, and there was still a notion of mutual respect for the gallantry of those who took up arms on both sides.

This same concept is manifested in the fact that there are a multitude of state confederate memorials at Gettysburg. Unfortunately, there is a nuance to this topic that eludes narrow-minded liberals.

I agree with you. He could have said something like what we both wrote. He just is incapable. He can not sell any message. He will always step on his pud.

in a purely sterile political environment, it's a worthy debate

yesterday, and after calling out the Alt-Left, which follows calling out the Alt-Right, which follows riots and one murder in VA....not the time to have that discussion. THAT is why it was stupid. it just devalued any message about the alt-Left by giving "low hanging fruit" for media/left criticism
