I'm pretty neoliberal, and support a large number of center left views. You all know that.
You might not know that I adore people with Down, and I'm sickened by the idea of eliminating Down syndrome via abortion. I'm also against abortion in general, especially when very viable options are available.
At the church I attend, there's an absolute rockstar that's got Down. He's the sweetest person I know, and knows a hell of a lot more than anyone not close to him gives him credit for. If I didn't know him, and hadn't met other people with Down through him, I might think eliminating the possibility of people having it was a good idea.
But it isn't. He loves his life. His family loves him. And from a distant, clinical view, he's not worth having around. That's horse shite.
Get to know everyone. You can, and probably will, learn something from all of them.

I'm not advocating one way or the other, but there are different levels of downs. Unfortunately they can be extremely dependent. While I wouldn't myself want my gf/wife to have an abortion, I am not in the position to tell a couple who may hardly be ready for a healthy baby, that they have to take care of a special needs child. I do know a couple through camps, churches, music, etc that are very fun and outgoing, but there are also some who have a very hard time functioning in society. I guess my point would be your friend sounds amazing but that is one person out of a huge scale of what ifs, and simply not fair to force a very difficult (regardless of how rewarding) life on some people. Special needs children don't fly from the nest at 18, it's a lifetime commitment. I respect your friend though he (she?) sounds amazing :)
