That doesn't mean it pumped water backwards, just means the pump impeller was rotating backwards. This happens on three phase motors that have two legs wired our of phase.

Problem is, this is the first thing you do before starting up a pump after installation, is you bump rotation. If backwards, the you flip two wire and check again......

That's common with newly installed pumps, that's why you check rotation and change wiring around if needed. Ever since Katrina that pumping station upgrades have been a cluster. They even installed some backwards at one station.
