"Humans" just don't have the 4-year expiration.

This was a big question from the source novel. It has been a question for fans of the film. There is even a conflict - Ridley says he directed the film as if Deckard was a replicant that didn't know it. Ford says he played the part as if Deckard was human.

yeah i'm assuming in addition to your big reveal, he admits he figured this out because Rachel died and he didn't after he discovered he was a repilicant. i figured this (some derivation of "humans" are replicants and Deckard is a replicant) had to be the plot when i saw Ford in the trailer. nothing else really makes any sense

The voiceover from the theatrical release says she didn't have the 4-year lifespan AND we get a happy ending scene of them driving in the sunshine up Route 1 or equivalent. Ridley specifically removed these in subsequent editions.

The problem comes in when we consider that Rachel was presented as a prototype - if they're ALL replicants, then this means they're pursuing this technology without knowing it has already been invented and they're it - sort of movie within a movie type vibe. Almost a Matrix-style mind frick, if we're to accept the reality of this film universe.

Keep in mind - it is Ridley's position that this universe exists in the same universe as the Alien franchise, and by extension Predator. So that opens up tons of possibilities.
