It's not that big of a gamble when he's getting top 5 talent but not producing like the rest are.
Miles wasn't even winning bowl games like he use to.. it was time man. The offense was ridiculously stale.
An established LSU is a pretty good gig to get. Even a so so coach like Miles proved he could walk into an established LSU and have success. Imagine an actual above average coach at an established LSU.

It's a major gamble replacing a winning coach. I dont care if we talking about Les, Mack Brown, Richt, or Fulmer. Like Les or not, but the guy had the highest winning percentage in LSU history and was still winning at 71% in his last three full years which was second best in the SEC.
Again, we are not talking about a coach with losing seasons or not having ranked teams or a 60% full stadium.
And I am not saying Les should have stayed, but this fire and hire are major gambles.
