And I have great health insurance, what is it that purchasing 'uninsured motorist' will get me, that I need, that I don't already get??
Can anyone answer this in laymens terns?

your theory works if you're thinking a small scale accident
imagine getting t-boned by a person without insurance and you lose the use of your arms or suffer some other injuries so that you can't work for a year. sure your comp will cover your car being totaled and your health insurance will cover the medical bills, but what about everything else?
